Six snowbirds lead by a grandson of Sicilia,
so called Don Vito, visited Sicilia from May 17th to May 27th. They were Fay and David, John and
Kathryn and Al and Ellen.
The tour was for 10 days starting of in
Palermo and then visiting Monreale, Vita, Erice, Trapani, Marza del Vallo, Marsala, Selunite, Agrigento, Enna, Piazza Armerina,
Taromina, Siracusa and Cefalu.
Along the way we feasted on Tuna, cous cous,
pasta in all its varieties, buffets groaning with eggplant in many foremats, fish in small rolls or their entirety, and of
course what passes for breakfast in Europe cake.
We visited all the noted sights from any
book or tour you were read about but experienced the real culture of Sicilia when we visited my family’s hometown of
Vita. Here the grandmother’s of Vita taught and fed us some Sicilian recipes, we visited a winery right in the town
and discovered David knew as much as the owner of the winery. This resulted in each couple being given 6 bottles of wine to
take along with us. The town was a typical farm town set in the Sicilian countryside of some 2,000 souls down from 6,000 because
of immigration to the new world.
On the day of the festival the town’s
population swelled to 1,000’s as people enjoyed what we began to call the De Ja Vue parade since it went through the
town three times.
